2004-04-08 - 10:29 a.m. There IS something right with the world. Inglewood voters rejected Wal Mart by a margin of 60% to 40%. Here’s the link. http://money.cnn.com/2004/04/07/news/fortune500/walmart_inglewood/index.htm. It gives me hope for the world that a behemoth like Wal Mart cannot strong arm its way into a community. What’s hilarious is that they tried to strong arm the city council and then when the city council said no, they tried to strong arm the city populace with a referendum. Actually what Wal Mart wanted to do was to build a store the size of 17 football fields without being subject to any regulations and get any public input. While I hate Wal Mart with a fiery passion, I am not opposed to every big box retailer. I shop at Target gleefully and I fully urge each and everyone one of you to shop at Costco. Why? Because they pay their workers well and give them health insurance. Moreover, the CEO of Costco makes “only” $350,000 a year and if Costco has a bad year, he forgoes a bonus. It’s sad that this behavior is considered exemplary but in the world of business the Costco CEO is a fucking saint.
