Veruca’s Secret Desires

So we signed the lease on our new place and it will be available to move in on February 1st. Our landlord lives near our current place so he stopped by and we signed the lease. He is such a nice guy and a little bit sad and lonely. Not in a sick way but more like a little lost puppy way. His wife died two years ago and she sounds like a way cool lady. Mr. Activision and I googled her and she was one hell of a scientist. She was in a similar field as he is and was like the chair of her department and won, like Spain’s Medal of Honor. How she did that without vacation with the Prince of Spain I have no idea. :P So all three of us make chit chat as we’re signing the appropriate documents and he’s telling us about his wife, who bought the house we will be renting. He is telling us all of how cool she is and we are trying not to let on that we already know all of that. He just spoke so lovingly of her and he said “A year ago I couldn’t have said this without crying.”

He tells us that he would love to see my quilting and that his ex-wife talked about how she wanted to take up quilting (the dead lady is his second wife). He’s definitely someone I’d invite over for dinner. But my secret fantasy is that this turns into one of those Hallmark Hall of Fame movies where we teach him how to live again and then when he learns to live a full and happy life without his wife, he drops dead and leaves us the house outright. We love it and cherish it and raise children in it and there’s a tree in the back that we plant with a little plaque that says “our landlord was a stand up guy.”
