2005-07-14 - 9:23 a.m. Woo hoo! Finished another 101. 43. Join a quilting bee 28 down tons more to go.
Last night was my first night there and it was a cultural learning experience. I was the youngest person there by about 30 years and the old person of color. Being young and the newbie, I was unusually deferential and subdued (yes the world did come to an end. Did you notice?) I had a great time and it was exactly how I imagined it to be. These are not your grandmother's old biddies. These are EPISCOPAL old biddies, which means they are totally liberal. As we were basting, we talked about the Bush administration (BOO), gentrification (BOO), and buying quaint houses in Maine (YAY). It really was a lovely social group. Well, lovely up to a point. I want to be an old lady because there's no bitchy like old lady bitchy. as the outsider in the group, I got to watch the weird passive agressive needling (no pun intended). With a group project, everyone has their own way of doing something. And the two leaders of the group had to keep their quilters in line. For exmaple, one of the leaders "corrected" one person's technique by saying "you COULD stich it that way but we're making an HEIRLOOM quilt." OUCH. Or in an instance of insubordination, one of the quilters said, "we could have just basted the quilt by using spray adhesive but I suppose we all need somethng to do." It was like being in an old biddy production of All About Eve. Anyway, look for future entries about my evenings with the old biddies because this fun won't stop.
