Action Alert!!!!!

Please call Senator Barbara Boxer and register your disgust with her support of the California anti- same-gender Marriage law.

Today in the Washington Post (More Cities Supportive of Gay Marriage Officials Say They Would Grant Licenses if They Could, but Others Urge Caution, Friday, February 20, 2004; Page A09). Mayors from such cities as Chicago, Plattsburgh, NY, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake City (you heard me right) all indicated they would be open to granting marriage licenses to same-gendered couples. Unfortunately, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer thinks otherwise. She says that a state law defining marriage as just between a man and a woman is fair. You’ve gotta be kidding me. At a time when mayors of a wide range of cities are defending their rights to define policy locally (because don’t conservatives love local control?), Senator Boxer has decided to cravenly throw her support to a law that denies queer couples the right to have their relationships recognized as equal to heterosexual couples. And she’s supposed to be one of the good guys. I can understand that you don’t want marriage to be some political football Sen. Boxer. Have you ever heard of the term “no comment?”

I want to say I believe marriage is not the end all be all of rights for queer people. I’d like to talk about poverty, racial injustice, and sexism. But when the people who got elected by us support laws that invalidate our relationships, the gloves are fucking off.

Please call Senator Boxer at (202) 224-3553 or one of her district offices and tell her you would like for her to reconsider he opinion of the California law defining marriage as between a man and a woman. If you live in California, let her staff know you are a constituent.

In another note, a political storm seems to be brewing in mr. Activision’s home state. Rumors are swirling that the Governor of Texas has been, ahem, allegedly doing some late night policy with the Secretary of State. So much so that Mrs. Governor is divorcing. I wouldn’t normally spread such gossip but this is the same guy who believes that marriage is between a man and a woman and sign Texas’ own Defense of Marriage Act.
